Placing Women at the Center of Prevention: Female Condoms and the Malawi Experience

Washington, D.C. / November 19, 2009

While Malawi has a high rate of HIV infections, especially among women, significant strides are being made by donors, the government, and civil society toward ensuring that women and men have information about and access to female condoms as a vital prevention tool.

On November 19, 2009, the Center for Health and Gender Equity, UNFPA, UNAIDS, the Global Campaign for Microbicides and the National Women’s Health Network held a community briefing in Washington, D.C., entitled “Placing Women at the Center of Prevention: Female Condoms and the Malawi Experience.” Presenters gave an update on the new FC2 female condom in the United States, in addition to the successes and challenges of FC2 female condom programming in Malawi. The briefing was attended by nearly 50 supporters, who engaged in a rich conversation with presenters.
