Our Strategy
The Prevention Now! Campaign uses an innovative and flexible advocacy approach that focuses on activities in the U.S. and internationally.
U.S. campaign efforts are directed at increasing U.S. investment in the procurement, distribution, and programming of female condoms within and across U.S. international AIDS and family planning programs. International and national campaign efforts mobilize new and existing female condom campaigns globally and seek to catalyze sustained advocacy at national and regional levels. The Prevention Now! advocacy approach combines network and capacity building, engagement of key decision-makers and policymakers, and media outreach.
Network and Capacity Building
The campaign identifies, engages, and mobilizes key constituencies and leaders in the U.S. and internationally to expand global access to female condoms.
Highlight: In June 2009, Prevention Now! teamed up with the Global Campaign for Microbicides to conduct a female condom advocacy training with community leaders in Uganda, a country that is reintroducing the female condom. Training participants were so inspired by skills and momentum from the training that they formed their own working coalition.
Engagement of Key Decision-makers
The campaign galvanizes U.S. and international female condom leaders to advocate with decision-makers such as government officials, bilateral and multilateral donors, and U.S. field mission representatives, to support increased investment in female condom procurement, distribution, and programming.
Highlight: During the 2008 reauthorization of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CHANGE and the Prevention Now! Campaign worked with key U.S. legislators to include legislative language distinguishing “male and female condoms” from “condoms.” PEPFAR law now recognizes the importance of both male and female condoms as critical tools for HIV prevention.
Media Outreach
The campaign takes advantage of strategic media opportunities to inform the broader public about the importance of female condoms and woman-initiated prevention.
Highlight: News coverage of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the FC2 female condom included mention of the international petition drive in support of female condoms orchestrated by the Prevention Now! Campaign.
